What is investment?

Investment is an act of economy conducted to increase the value of the asset one has. Investment can be done through various ways and instruments, both traditional and modern.  Some examples include:
1.    Saving in  Bank to obtain yield in the form of interest.
2.    Buying assets such as property, gold or other commodities with expectation to obtain profit from the increase of price.
3.    Establishing own company or doing business with the expectation to obtain added values from the increase of wealth.
4.    Invest in securities such as stocks or bonds, letter of credit, etc to obtain capital gain, dividend, or interest.

What are Opportunities and Risks of Investments?

Every investment contains both opportunities of return and risks of loss.  Investments with low risk will bring relatively low return, while the higher the opportunity of return is, the higher the risk is.
Investing by saving in a bank is relatively safe but the opportunity is very limited to small interest, while investing in properties brings opportunity to get high increase of property price but also risk of decrease in the price and the difficulties to sell in a short time.  Same thing with investing in securities like shares may bring high capital gain and dividend income but still has the risk of capital loss and no dividend obtained in case the company invested in is operating on loss.

What are Shares?

Shares are proof of company ownership.  Shareholders of a company are its legal owners.  Shares are securities commonly traded at the Stok Market. They are easily traded and have potentials to bring relatively high capital gain in a short time.  However it is important to remember that high return investments usually have high risks therefore fundamental and technical analysis are needed prior to investing and knowledge in diversifying investments is fundamental to bring optimal return with minimum risk.

What is Capital Gain?

Capital Gain is gain obtained from selling shares.  For example: if you buy  PADI shares at Rp400,- per share then sell it at Rp500,- per share,  you obtain Capital Gain of Rp100,- or 25% of the investment done.  On the contrary, if you sell at loss,  you suffer Capital Loss.

What is Dividend?

Dividend is part of earnings per share distributed to shareholders. The amount is decided by  General Meeting of Shareholders.

Is There any Other Investment Risk in Share Investment?

Other than the risk of Capital Loss or no Capital Gain on share investment, the other risk is when the trading is suspended by the stock exchange authorities or in case the company invested in go bankrupt and be liquidated so its shares are worthless or not sellable.

What is the Stock Exchange?

The Stock Exchange is the institution facilitating all stock trading in Indonesia but do not conduct the trade directly.  Trade can only be conducted by securities companies which has licence as a Securities Brokerage and a clearing member of Indonesia Stock Exchange.  Customers who wish to invest or trade stocks may instruct buy or sell through securities companies.  The Stock Exchange is merely a facilitator providing trading system for securities companies.
